What To Do If a Scam Website Traps Your Browser

How to handle and stop "Virus Detected" browser pop-ups

🚨 What To Do If a Scam Website “Traps” Your Browser

Sometimes scam websites will try to scare you by opening endless pop‑ups that say things like “Virus Detected” or “Your Computer Is Locked.” These pages are designed to keep you clicking.

⚠️ Important:
Clicking the “X,” “OK,” or “Cancel” buttons often does not close the scam and can sometimes trigger more pop‑ups.

Instead, follow the steps below to close everything safely.

🛑 The “Panic Button” – Force Close Your Browser

If your browser won’t let you leave a suspicious page, don’t keep clicking inside it. Use your computer to shut it down completely.

On Windows (Task Manager)

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc on your keyboard.
  2. If Task Manager opens in a small window, click More details.
  3. Under the Processes tab, find your browser
(Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, or Firefox).
  4. Right‑click the browser and select End task.
  5. The browser will close immediately.

⚠️ When you reopen the browser, do NOT click “Restore Tabs” — that can bring the scam page right back.

🔔 Stop Scam Notifications from Coming Back

Some scam sites ask for permission to send notifications and then abuse it. After closing the browser, follow the steps below for your browser.

🌐 Google Chrome

  1. Click the three dots () in the top‑right → Settings
  2. Click Privacy and securitySite Settings
  3. Click Notifications
  4. To prevent future prompts:
✅ Select Don’t allow sites to send notifications
  5. To remove existing scam sites:
Under Allowed, remove any site you don’t recognize

🧭 Microsoft Edge

  1. Click the three dots (… )Settings
  2. Select Cookies and site permissions
  3. Click Notifications
  4. Turn off Ask before sending (recommended)
  5. Under Allow, remove any suspicious websites

🦊 Mozilla Firefox

  1. Click the three lines (≡)Settings
  2. Click Privacy & Security
  3. Scroll to Permissions → click Settings… next to Notifications
  4. Remove any unfamiliar websites
  5. Check Block new requests asking to allow notifications
  6. Click Save Changes

💡 Helpful Tips

  • Check the website address:
If a pop‑up says “Virus Detected,” look closely — it usually shows a website name like fake-security-alert.com. That means it’s just a web page, not your computer.
  • Quick reset option:
If you don’t want to hunt down permissions, you can clear browsing data
(specifically Cookies and other site data) in your browser settings. This often resets all site permissions.
  • Windows notifications:
If alerts look like they’re coming from Windows itself, go to:
    Settings → System → Notifications
and turn off “Get tips and suggestions when I use Windows.”
  • Extensions check:
If pop‑ups keep coming back, check your browser’s Extensions/Add‑ons menu and remove anything you didn’t install yourself.

When in Doubt

If something doesn’t feel right:

  • Close the browser using Task Manager
  • Do not call phone numbers shown in pop‑ups
  • Submit a ticket so IT can take a look
