How to Fix “Storage Almost Full” on Your Computer (Windows)
for Users WITHOUT OneDrive Account Access

 When to use this version

Use these steps if the user:

  • Does not have a OneDrive account
  • Stores files locally only
  • Needs to clean up temporary files, cache, and system clutter

PURPOSE

This process removes temporary system files, cached data, and unused system content to reclaim disk space.

⚠️ This does not back files up to the cloud.

STEP‑BY‑STEP INSTRUCTIONS

Step 1 — Open Storage Settings

  1. Click Start
  2. Open Settings
  3. Select System
  4. Click Storage

Step 2 — Turn On Storage Sense

  1. Locate Storage Sense
  2. Toggle it On

Step 3 — Configure Storage Sense

  1. Click Storage Sense (or Configure Storage Sense or run it now)

Enable:

  • Keep Windows running smoothly
  • Automatic User Content Cleanup

 

Step 4 — Configure Cleanup Timing

Under Run Storage Sense:

  • Select When disk space is low

Step 5 — Review Temporary File Cleanup

Ensure Storage Sense is allowed to clean:

  • Temporary system files
  • Recycle Bin contents (older files)
  • Temporary app data

✅ These files are safe to remove

 

Step 6 — Run Storage Sense Immediately

  1. Scroll to the bottom
  2. Click Run Storage Sense now

RESULT

  • Temporary files are removed
  • Disk space is reclaimed
  • System performance improves
  • Ongoing automatic cleanup is enabled

 

IMPORTANT NOTES (DO NOT SKIP)

  • This does not back up files
  • Users should not manually delete work files
  • Escalate to IT if disk space remains low
